TV Programme Happy Birthday Broons on BBC Television

It was a delight to watch Happy Birthday Broons on Friday 30th December 2005. Pure dead brilliant in fact! Like many Scots I’ve grown up reading The Broons and Oor Wullie annuals and getting my weekly read of their adventures in The Sunday Post.

It was interesting to see the behind the scenes of how the cartoon strips are put together from idea, words, pictures and the unique black and white illustrations. Isn’t it great that the words can be typed out on The Shetland Islands and drawn in Dundee.

The behind the scenes look of the offices of The Sunday Post was a privilege, especially seeing the vaulted room where all the original artwork and annuals are stored. I’d love to be able to read the first Broons and Oor Wullie annual.

Each Sunday night I sit down to unwind reading them. Wouldn’t it be great if the cartoon strips came alive onto the telly – Elaine C Smith voicing The Bairn was just how I would have imagined her to sound. Ewan McGregor could continue his role as the narrator and Ford Kiernan would make a great Paw Broon.

The programme celebrated the 70th anniversary of The Broons cartoon strip and I’m sure we will be reading them in another 70 years.
